TIEMH Employee Spotlight: Mordecai Dixon

Mordecai Dixon

As part of our monthly series, we’re introducing team members from the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health. In each feature, you’ll learn more about their interests, the projects they support, and the work they’re leading across TIEMH.

This month, we’re spotlighting Mordecai Dixon (he/him), MA. Mordecai serves as a Senior Program Coordinator/ Implementation Consultant for the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health, supporting projects for the Center Mental Health Implementation and Support (CMHIS) and Suicide Care Initiative (SCI) grants.

Mordecai has worked in human services with diverse populations for thirty years. He is a masters level graduate with a specialization in Organizational Psychology. Mordecai has dedicated his career to improving service outcomes of organizations and the people impacted by services. He has worked with a variety of service organizations, providing administrative support, operations management, quality management, training, and staff development. He has provided leadership resulting in the development of programs in child welfare, transitional housing and homeless services, suicide prevention and crisis intervention, as well as championed program development of peer care coordination services. His passion for fostering diverse and equitable service environments is evident in the work he has performed in for-profit and nonprofit organizations.

Mordecai believes organizational culture directly connects with service outcomes. His goal is to enhance the capacity of organizations, at all levels, serving those identified as most vulnerable.

Let’s dive into Mordecai’s interview:

What projects do you work on?

I work on Center Mental Health Implementation and Support (CMHIS) and Suicide Care Initiative (SCI) Grants.

What do you enjoy about working at TIEMH?

I have worked for many organizations over my career. TIEMH is an organization with incredible depth and scope. The team achieves its goals by building organizational capacity, a personal passion, every day.

I work with highly qualified and caring professionals. Passion pervades each project, and my team interacts with each other in healthy and developmental ways. One would assume these are pervasive norms — especially in human service organizations. Unfortunately, this is not always the case.

Developing resources that help organizations achieve their service goals is rewarding. I am always encouraged to share information about TIEMH with people I meet.

What are you currently reading, watching, or listening to?

I have enjoyed reading “The Purpose Gap” by Dr. Patrick B. Reyes.

As we head into fall, what are you excited about this September?

This fall is a turning point for projects I support. Both efforts are making an impact and building momentum. It is fun to watch TIEMH projects grow from infancy into more mature, assured versions of themselves. I’m looking forward to being part of that growth process for the team, the organizations we serve, and the mental health field.

Thanks for sharing, Mordecai!
