As part of our monthly series, we’re introducing team members from the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health. In each feature, you’ll learn more about their interests, the projects they support, and the work they’re leading across TIEMH.
This month, we’re spotlighting Jennifer Baran-Prall (she/her). Jen serves as a Program Manager for the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health, supporting work for the Southwestern Plains Hub, Center for Mental Health Implementation Support.
She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker whose career has focused on helping people recover from trauma. She has served as the suicide prevention coordinator for the Veterans Health Administration and has a special interest in serving populations at risk. She believes that providing service to others with compassion creates lasting change.
Let’s dive into Jen’s interview:
What projects do you work on?
Southwestern Plains Hub, Center for Mental Health Implementation Support.
What do you enjoy about working at TIEMH?
What I enjoy most about working at TIEMH is the people. I am grateful to be part of such an outstanding team. My colleagues are kind, intelligent, collaborative, and deeply person-centered. The work we do is meaningful, and I appreciate that our culture reflects the same values we strive to promote in the communities and organizations we serve.
TIEMH fosters a supportive environment where people are encouraged to grow, develop their strengths, and bring their authentic selves to work. There is a strong sense of shared purpose, mutual respect, and good humor, along with a genuine commitment to work-life balance.
What stands out most is the collective dedication to making a difference and pursuing the greater good, even when challenges arise. It’s inspiring to be part of a team that remains focused on creating positive impact while supporting and valuing its employees.
What are you currently reading, watching, or listening to?
I just finished two books: The Things We Never Say by Elizabeth Strout and The Stationery Shop by Marjan Kamali. They were both great! I’m currently reading The Pirate Queen by Ariel Lawhon, and so far I’m really enjoying it! (Ariel Lawhon is an outstanding author)
November is a month of gratitude. Can you share something you’re grateful for?
The other day, my son and I were watching the squirrels and chipmunks in our backyard during a very cold, rainy afternoon. He remarked how grateful he was to have a warm home and worried about the people and animals who don’t. His observation reminded me not to take life’s basic comforts for granted. I am deeply grateful for a warm home, for having my basic needs met, and for the love of my family, friends, and colleagues.
I find myself increasingly thankful for the opportunity to simply just live. Life comes with its share of ups and downs, but it is an incredible gift to experience it all: to connect with others, to give and receive love, to find joy in everyday moments, and to continue growing along the way.
Thanks for sharing, Jen!!
