Dr Annie Smith (she/her) is a Co-Principal Investigator and Research Associate at the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health (TIEMH), University of Texas at Austin. She completed her PhD in Criminology at Griffith University, where her research explored survivor empowerment following intimate partner abuse. She also holds a Master of Criminology and Criminal Justice (First Class Honours) and completed advanced undergraduate studies in psychology.
Annie’s work spans forensic mental health, criminal justice, domestic and family violence, and implementation-focused program evaluation. She is passionate about translating research into practical policy, educational resources, and system improvements that strengthen services for vulnerable populations. Her current work includes statewide evaluations of forensic mental health services, court diversion initiatives, and collaborative projects with government and community partners.
Before joining TIEMH, Annie worked as a Probation and Parole Officer with Queensland Corrective Services, including serving as an acting Court Prosecutor. She also spent almost a decade teaching and developing criminology curriculum at Griffith University, where she enjoyed helping students connect research with real-world practice.
Outside of work, Annie enjoys travelling with her husband, spending time with her two daughters, and is always planning the next adventure.
