Person-centered care is one of the six aims of healthcare quality established by the Institute of Medicine. While person-centered planning (PCP) is considered an evidence-based practice in the field of developmental disabilities, it has just recently been identified as a promising practice in the behavioral health care system.
PCP or person-centered recovery planning (PCRP) in mental health is defined as “a collaborative process between the person and his or her supporters (including the clinical practitioner) that results in the development and implementation of an action plan to assist the person in achieving his or her unique, personal goals along the journey of recovery” (Tondora, Miller, & Davidson, 2012, p. 411). Since 2013, researchers at TIEMH have been evaluating ongoing efforts to implement PCRP in public mental health organizations in Texas.
