As part of our new monthly series, we’ll introduce team members from the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health (TIEMH). You’ll learn more about their interests, the projects they work on at TIEMH, and more.
This month, the spotlight is on Victoria Fleming (she/her). She received her undergraduate degree in Biology from Baylor University and Master of Public Health degree from UTHealth School of Public Health in Austin. She’s also pursuing her PhD in Public Health, with an emphasis in behavioral sciences.
Victoria has worked in a variety of public health settings and most recently served as an Information Systems Manager at the Texas Department of State Health Services. Her research interests include streamlining access to mental health treatment, help-seeking behaviors, and utilization of technology to improve health outcomes.
Let’s dive into Victoria’s interview:
1) What projects do you work on?
I work for Project AWARE (Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education) Texas, which aims to strengthen community and school-based supports for the mental health, wellness, and resiliency of students.
2) What’s your official job title?
I work as an evaluator; I review data to help assess how well we are meeting our grant goals. My work focuses on understanding the delivery and impact of mental health services for children in school districts in Central Texas.
3) What do you enjoy about working at TIEMH?
I love knowing that my work has an impact and is improving the lives of students across the state. I also work with the most amazing and supportive coworkers who have such unique and diverse backgrounds. They make work so fun and enjoyable!
4) What are you currently reading, watching, or listening to?
I love podcasts and celebrity pop culture. My favorite podcasts I’ve been listening to are “Good Hang” with Amy Poehler, “Beyond the Blinds,” and “Lemme Say This”.
5) What’s your favorite springtime activity?
It’s the best time of year to be outside, so anything from spending time in my garden, to walking my golden retriever, or hanging out on a patio.
