As systems move toward providing trauma-informed care, it is important for everyone at all levels of an organization to understand the basics of trauma-informed care. This interactive three-session course introduces the participant to understanding stress, understanding trauma, and understanding trauma-informed care. All organizational staff can complete the course to develop a shared language, understand stress and trauma, connect the role of resilience in response to adversity and trauma, and identify ways everyone in the organization can support trauma-informed care and implement trauma-informed approaches.

Session Titles and Objectives:

Session 1: Understanding Stress

Objectives:

• Develop a shared language around stress, adversity, trauma, as well as healing and resilience.

• Identify different types of stress.

• Identify ways stress affects the body.

Session 2: Understanding Trauma

Objectives:

• Make the distinction between trauma and ACEs.

• Continue to grow our understanding of various forms of trauma.

• Connect the role of resilience in response to trauma and adversity.

Session 3: Understanding Trauma Informed Care

Objectives:

• Identify the four key assumptions in a trauma informed approach.

• Discuss the six SAMHA trauma-informed care principles.

• Identify ways the participant and their organizations can implement a trauma-informed care approach.

This online course was created collaboratively between the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health, South Southwest Mental Health Technology Transfer Center, and the Texas Cross-Systems Trauma-Informed Care Initiative with support from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

There is a quiz built into each session, with the opportunity to retake twice for successful completion and receipt of your certificate.

Continuing education is provided by certification bodies in Texas for social workers, licensed professional counselors, licensed marriage and family therapists, mental health peer specialists, recovery support peer specialists, certified family partners, justice involved recovery peer specialists, peer specialist supervisors, and certified prevention specialists.

You will need to determine if they are eligible in your state for your credential.
